2022 Reichwald Trophy Fives Tournament 2 10 22
02 October 2022
Match Report Despite the dire weather warnings earlier in the week in which it was predicted that there would be up to 8 hours of rain inundating Blundell’s on Sunday, the sun really shone on the 14th Reichwald trophy for the whole afternoon. Frank Akerman, the tournaments creator kept a benign eye on it from afar! It was a leaner affair than usual, due to various circumstances, with 8 current pupils competing against 8 Old Blundellians. It was good to Welcome Robin and Edmund Thompson who had been pupils in the 1980’s and who evidently had lost none of their skills! It was also good to see Ed Swarbrick and Addie Chai as the most recent OB contingent. Janet Wooff (GH 1980-82, OB Club Secretary) provided a very tasty Lunch to inaugurate the event. The Afternoon was organised and managed with his normal efficiency by Wayne Enstone, ably assisted by Alexandra Steel, who currently runs the OB Fives club. The tournament followed its usual pattern of a current pupil playing with an Old Blundellian. The pairings were spot on and resulted in many close and tough matches. After two and a half hours of intense play, all players felt that that they had deserved the excellent tea! The standard of play was extremely high and there were many gripping matches that went to the wire. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, well supported by parents and families.Mr Wielenga presented the trophies and commented that Fives was an essential and characterful part of Blundell’s sporting life and exhorted the current players to go and spread the word! Particularly among the girls. We hope to welcome many to next year’s tournament!RESULTSWinners of Reichwald Trophy: Jacob Cole / Robin Thompson (FH 1983-1988)Runners Up: Jemima Mitchell / Addie Chai (OH 2011-2018)1st Plate: Dom Wielenga / Alexandra Steel (GH 1998-2005)
