2023 OB Sport Weekend 24/25 3 23
24 March 2023
Over 100 Old Blundellians, members of the Blundell’s community, pupils and staff competed or supported at the OB Sport Weekend in March. All contributed to making the weekend a particular success this year and thanks go to everyone concerned. Football, Boys’ Hockey, Netball and Shooting v pupils took place, with Fives played during the week. Post match complimentary refreshments were provided by the OB Club in the Beale Centre, where many took advantage of the opportunity to catch up, reminisce and linger to enjoy the atmosphere and camaraderie. The mix of age groups and sporting talents was particularly pleasing to see and we hope to build on this in future years. If you would like to be involved in this annual sporting weekend, please contact Janet or look out for the notifications in the PP or Diary.

Shooting Report by Barry Dawe:

It was excellent to see so many Old Blundellians arrive and support the event, and though they missed the pupils due to lessons we still had a very competitive match. The 8 pupils open the match with a very credible score of score of 748 with top scorer Freddie Gladwin, and though the 25 yards looked a lot longer for several of the OB's again we saw some very credible scores with top scores coming from Jessica Lampard and Sim Allanson-Bailey both scoring a very impressive 94. But with five of the pupils scoring over 95, including Freddie Gladwin's 99 the school won the match 748 - 695. But as always with such occasions it was more about the social aspect, remembering times gone by and realising how lucky we are to be a part of the Blundell's family.

Girls’ Netball Report by Amy Candler:

1st VII Current pupils v OBs

30-24 Win for the 1st VII Current pupils
What a game to end the season – a youthful, high quality OB opposition drew a crowd and both the current and past Blundellians had patches of brilliance. The game ebbed and flowed and fittingly the score was 20-20 going into the last quarter. In the end, the current 1st VII got stronger and stronger and put together some tantalising attacking play to secure a convincing goal difference in the final quarter. This was a game played in true Blundell’s style; determination and commitment to win but with the utmost respect for all on court and true sportsmanship to match. This game was a pleasure to be part of and we look forward to similar in the future.

Boy’s Hockey Report by Toby Peyton-Jones:

Another great OB weekend saw the first team boys battle against the OBs on the hockey pitch. The school team have had a great season winning all but one cup match, but unlike most years the OBs had a full team on the pitch with legs to spare on the bench and were ready to put down a good fight. The OBs started well and to the surprise of the school team put a goal away in the first few minutes through Sam Mildren; we were on top!! But not for long. The school team, led by Ben Fitzherbert, picked themselves up and started to play some really good team hockey, with goals coming left right and centre. Still the OBs made some good linking plays up the pitch, but struggled to convert, only scoring one more goal in the first half. This year as well as having a full team, the OBs managed to keep everyone on the pitch avoiding any cards. You would have thought this would have given the OBs the upper hand, but still the school scored regular goals in open play and off well-drilled short corner routines in the second half, with pupil Tom claiming a hat-trick. Henri Behrend (OB) scored a penalty flick and drag flick in the second half, to bring the OBs up to 4 goals, but unfortunately this was not enough, and the game ended 4-8 to the school. A good game was had by all, and a good chat was had after over a beer and teas in the Beale centre. Big thanks to Janet and Mark Wooff and the school for organising another great weekend. Can’t wait to see everyone again next year.
